abookaweek 2012: week seven

2012 February 19

The Museum of Dr Moses, by Joyce Carol Oates

Category: Short stories

Story: A collection of 10 stories exploring some form of ‘evil’. There is a remarkable number of serial killers in this volume, but there are also tales about more, er, mundane cruelty.

Opinion: Twice now I have struggled through Oates’ We Were the Mulvaneys, unable to finish it, and I have therefore banned it from my life. But since Oates is hailed as one of the best writers of our time, I felt that I had to give her work another shot. And I’m glad that I did! While the immediate pleasure, for me, was derived out of the sick and twisted plot itself, it’s made infinitely better by the incredible storytelling. Here is a writer who knows how to create suspense and not let you down.
