In the Shadow of No Towers, by Art Spiegelman

Category: Graphic novel

Story: A collection of 10 full-page comix which Spiegelman created for Die Zeit in the aftermath of 9/11, when he was struggling with the behavior of the US government. There’s a supplement consisting of a history of comics in newspapers which gives a bit of context for the way Spiegelman drew and wrote his pages.

Opinion: I thought I would love this, because Spiegelman is great (because of Maus and his Maurice Sendak comic) and 9/11 will never not be interesting to me, but I didn’t love it. There were bits that I thought were genius, and then there were lots of panels and arcs that went right over my head. It’s almost as if the reason I don’t get a lot of the things he references or explains is that I didn’t live in the US when 9/11 happened, but I know that can’t be true because otherwise why would it be published in Die Zeit?

I’ll try again in a few years.
