The Sisters Brothers, by Patrick DeWitt

Category: Recent (published within the last year or so)

Story: The Sisters brothers are notorious killers for hire in Oregon, 1851. When their employer sends them to kill a man in California, they accept the job without asking any questions, and quickly find themselves thrust into the gold rush.

Opinion: I was unexpectedly blown away by this book; I thought I’d like it, but I actually fell head over heels for it. It’s funny, adventurous, and satirical. It has a great plot, eerie dream sequences and amusing historical tidbits, for instance when two characters bond over tooth-brushing (which was not widely practiced or even known of back then).

Although the ending left a little to be desired, I still give it 5 stars. I can’t wait to re-read it in a few years’ time.
